When you're sizing up the green with an iron in-hand, what kind of shot do you go for?

If you’re faced with a tricky approach shot, are you a risk-taker? Or do you prefer to play it safe? Risk-reward is the eternal question when it comes to how you’ll play your shot.

It can be one of the best feelings in golf to size up an approach, strike it well, and feel the satisfaction of having your shot come to nestle close to the pin. But it can also be instantly disheartening to go for the hole only to be caught in a pesky hazard.

However you’re used to playing, the changing of the seasons might have just made up your mind for you…

Preparing for winter

We’ve just had a glorious summer with plenty of hot sunny days spent on the golf course. During this time, the courses have been in immaculate condition, but the winter brings with it certain challenges that go beyond there being less natural daylight.

The winter air is dense and rich with moisture, much more so than that of the summer months. This most notably causes there to be more resistance as the ball travels through the air, causing it to not fly as far.

While this means the ball doesn’t bump and run as much, it means you can essentially go for the flag with the knowledge that your ball is going to sit down straight away rather than bounce off the green. This makes it a whole lot more exciting when you pull off a really good approach shot, and have the satisfaction of watching your ball sit down pleasantly a matter of feet away from the hole.

Another thing to consider therefore, is that if you’ve been used to hitting bump-and-run shots in the warmer weather, you’ll need to adjust your strategy as this method will have you falling short of the green in the winter.

Practice makes perfect
